Understanding AI

SUCCESS RATES....

You can expect a range of results from AI depending on factors perviously mentioned, such as nutrition and the condition of your cattle but on average the below are the results we expect using conventional semen:

50% – 60% – Satisfactory Result

60% – 70% – Good Result

Above 70% – Excellent Result

Using sexed semen you can expect 10% – 15% reductions in success rates compared to conventional semen.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR COWS CYCLE

Your cows must be cycling regularly before attempting to AI – if they are not you could end up wasting your money. Cows need to be at least 8 weeks post calving (even if they are cycling prior to this it is unlikely they will hold a pregnancy this soon after calving).

Most cows cycle every 21 days but this can range between 18 and 24 days. If you are looking to AI using natural heats make a note on your calendar whenever you see your cows on standing heat.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK

Before contacting us it is beneficial to know the basic information about AI – for example – cattle will need to be brought to the yards 3 times in 10 days (9 days for heifers) – if this is not something that is possible then you may need to rethink your plan.

Making sure cattle are on the all important rising plane of nutrition before starting.

Having a good idea about the semen you wish to use.

Knowing times and dates you will and won’t be available.
